On The Wrist: The Bulova Lunar Pilot

A Perfect Companion For Your Next Trip To The Moon, And Beyond.

Like many other watch enthusiasts, when the words “Lunar Watch” come to mind, flashes of the iconic Omega Speedmaster flirt into our imaginations. It is a grail watch for most, and has always held a special place in my heart. I am an avid space “nerd”, ever since my Uncle had given me a VHS of the original Star Wars film when I was five years old, I was hooked! My imagination often drifts into thoughts of space travel, other solar systems, and feeds off of the sense of adventure and unknown that often goes hand in hand.

Obviously, a timepiece that is so entwined with our history of space travel would entice me, and I had yet to acquire the funds to purchase a piece of this history, until I came across a review of Bulova’s contribution.

From the moment I set my eyes on the face of the Bulova Lunar Pilot Chronograph, I felt in that moment as Armstrong or Aldrin must have felt when they gazed out on the rocky expanse of the lunar surface.

Three days to the moon, (or three days of Amazon delivery), and the watch was mine. Immediately as I opened the simple Bulova white box packaging, the weight of this watch took me by surprise. It felt solid, like lunar rock solid. The matte black dial with three chronographs, 45 mm unpolished case and patterned leather band all felt really well made. The elongated chronograph pushers had great action, and looked like the wings of the now retired space shuttle. A simple date window between 4 and 5 kept the dial uncomplicated, and the tachymeter scale gave this watch a real “tool” watch feeling. As it should, for when the watch is turned over, and caseback is revealed, the true story behind this watch becomes clear.

The precursor to this particular watch, worn by astronaut David Scott during the Apollo 15 missions, and it’s journey to the Hadley Rille landing site, could be clearly read. Under the surface, beat the 262 khz high-performance quartz movement. Ultra accurate, and after several weeks of testing, I was finding myself tuning my automatic watches in my collection to this lunar companion, vs my trusty Casio.

Overall, this watch is a real treasure in my collection, perhaps one day I’ll add a Speedmaster, but until then, I’d be honored to share my seat with the Lunar Pilot on the next launch into the unknown.
