The Case for Collecting: Green with Envy

Building a truly “Green” watch collection, one dial at a time.

Debuting with a new type of column for the blog, we will explore the building of a collection that utilizes different themes, with the flavour of this week’s column being all things “Green”.

The colour green in watches, whether in the forms of British Racing or Forest, has become much more sought after in the past few years by collectors. This has become evident by just perusing the landing pages of various top watch blogs across the internet. Although the hype and demand seen at AD’s for steel watches with blue dials has yet to simmer, green is fast becoming the new go-to. This colour has had a long history with luxury products and brands, whether by being the colour of choice for the Queen’s collection of vintage LR Defenders, or the stitching on Tennis’ favourite crocodile logo.

We will begin the building of our collection by starting from lowest price point ascending to highest, and attempting to hit the major touchstones of each collection; Sports/Office/Dress/Flex.

Oris – Aquis Date Diver

This watch just screams “Go! Explore!” the deepest ocean reef you can find. We have the non-Oris 400 caliber version here to start off our collection. The interplay between both the green of the sunray dial and the ceramic bezel ignite the heart, and opting for this base SW-200 movement version won’t ignite the wallet.

Longines Spirit Zulu Time

When Longines launched this stunning pilot’s watch with GMT function, the proverbial jaw hit the floor. The brown calf leather strap, gold polished GMT arrow hand and dark green bezel make for a truly upscale combination. This watch will definitely be noticed both in the boardroom, and the cockpit.

Grand Seiko – SBGW285 “Flow of Seasons”

In choosing a dress watch for this collection, time-only and dial were two very important factors. The Grand Seiko “Flow of Seasons” hits both of these marks in stride. The watch sports a lush, dark green dial that evokes the changing of summer season to autumn. The green scales of the alligator strap are rather sharp as well.

MSRP $4,800 USD

Case Size: 37mm

Breitling – Superocean Heritage Chronograph

By far, one of the nicest green dials to ever grace a dive watch, the Superocean Heritage Chronograph takes its owner from the depths of obscurity up to the surface of ultimate luxury. It is the perfect combination of rugged tool watch and wrist flex. As well, the choice of the Breitling mesh bracelet but fabricated in rubber takes the look of this watch to the next level.
