Venerable Vintage: A Linen dial Omega Seamaster DeVille from the ’60s

Longtime friend of the blog, Remi Dubois, invites us to take a look at his first Vintage purchase.

There is something truly special about a dress watch. When one is adorned on the wrist, the world seems to open up and anything becomes possible. Private jet invitation to the Cote d’Azur? Sure why not. A Black Tie event at the Museum of Fine Arts? Feels right at home. An element that deepens this feeling even further is when the said dress watch is gold. Nothing says refined elegance better than this. Finding the perfect gold dress watch can and will be an entire discussion unto itself, however today we look at the personal choice of Remi Dubois, a Software Developer Engineer living in Montreal, Canada.

In speaking with Remi, we know that his search for his first luxury watch was a long one. He always knew it needed to be a dress watch, on a leather strap, with a gold metal case. These were the traits that suited Remi’s lifestyle the best. He had also narrowed down the brand to Omega rather quickly. With those key characteristics in mind, the hunt was on. Through various platforms and postings, Remi finally stumbled onto the watch that would ultimately become the darling of his collection.

The watch was listed for sale from a UK seller that specialized in vintage Omega and Tudor. After vetting the seller and reading through all of the supporting material, Remi purchased the watch and the waiting game began. Once it arrived, Remi joined us for an afternoon to talk about the newest addition to his collection.

This particular piece hails from the Swinging Sixties, 1964 to be more precise. It has a 34mm case in gold with the caseback in steel, where the traditional Seamaster emblem can be seen with the words “Waterproof” featured under. It came supplied on an aftermarket leather strap in cognac brown, with an original Omega buckle attached.

The real star of the show is the stunning dial, which features a rare texture that is referred to as a “Linen” dial, for its extremely similar appearance to the textile. The gold hands, raised gold hour markers and logo give this watch a very luxurious aesthetic. The beating heart inside this watch is the Omega automatic calibre 562. This a lovely 24 jewel movement with all of the finishing one would expect from Omega.

Overall, this is a truly stunning piece that will serve Remi faithfully for the rest of his life. It captures the essence of the vintage gold dress watch perfectly. We are excited to follow Remi on his continuing journey into the watch world, where will it lead him next? All we know, is that his wrist will be in good company.
